Carbon removals are a crucial technology to reach the climate neutrality. Yet, it is necessary to boost their upscaling and this can be done by the implementation of certification schemes.

The European Commission has adopted the first set of methodologies to certify permanent carbon removals. This is a voluntary certification and it is focused for three technologies:

  • Direct air capture with carbon storage (‘DACCS’)
  • Biogenic emissions capture with carbon storage (‘BioCCS’)
  • Biochar carbon removal (‘BCR’).

It is expected that by providing clarity on the monitoring and verification of these technologies, there will be more oportunities for innovation and invesmtent for these technologies.
